About this tour

Expect 8 days of fantastic non stop riding on some of the North Islands best roads. Explore the coastal beaches & forests of the Coromandel, the geothermal wonderland of Rotorua and Taupo, the architectural beauty of Art Deco Napier and the unspoilt scenery of Taranaki and the Forgotten World Highway.

This great ride starts with the challenging Coromandel Loop Road, combining winding coastal roads and stunning beaches with climbing twists through forested ranges. From Coromandel you’ll wind your way through the Karangahake Gorge to the gentler roads of the Waikato plains making your way south to the thermal wonderland of Rotorua and then on to beautiful Art Deco Napier. But your journey doesn't end here, you'll also discover the famous Forgotten World Highway, admire the majestic Mt Taranaki and explore beautiful Lake Taupo. From Taupo your ride is through winding forest roads and farmland taking the smaller and more scenic roads back to Auckland. This ride is a perfect way to experience the delightful scenery of the Central North Island.

Day 1 of 8

Auckland to Whitianga - Self Guided

This morning you will collect your motorcycle from our Auckland headquarters and ride towards the East Coast & the start of the Coromandel Loop Rd. This narrow, twisty & windy road hugs the coast with fantastic views across the Firth of Thames and Hauraki Gulf and is a favourite destination for motorcycle riders. A road trip along the Coromandel Peninsula has got to be one of the best scenic drives in New Zealand. Between its pristine white sand beaches, turquoise sea, and fern-filled rainforests, the Coromandel is one of the most gorgeous regions in the North Island. It's worth making a stop for lunch in Coromandel Town so you can sample the local delicacy - oysters. Tonight your accommodation is in the small coastal town of Whitianga.

  • “My wife and I have gone on a few similar self-guided tours. The Open Road experience is at the top of our list. It started with great communication leading up to the adventure, Lance and Sally do a great job of getting things set up and organized. Pickup at the airport, installing our GPS system on the bike and daily check-ins to make sure things are going well are all part of the great personal touch which set this trip apart from others. Great scenic roads, fantastic lodging and sightseeing suggestions that were catered to our preferences made this trip unique. We highly recommend Sally and Lance for your next adventure! Looked after off the bike too

We take you to corners of New Zealand most visitors drive past, and the evenings are part of the tour: hotels we choose ourselves, Pacific Rim cooking and good local wine and beer to go with it.
