Day 1 of 4
Auckland to Russell - Self Guided
This morning you will collect your motorcycle from our Auckland headquarters and head north over the Auckland Harbour Bridge for the start of your thrilling adventure in the Far North. Your journey will take you towards the stunning Bay of Islands, following the captivating Secret Coastal route via Helena Bay and the Tutukaka Coast. This particular stretch of coastline holds great appeal for surfers, fishermen and Kiwi holiday makers, but still remains relatively untouched. Take your time, and uncover its many hidden treasures along the way. Your final destination today is the little seaside town of Russell, once better known by its Māori name of Kororareka. Russell was NZ’s first sea port and European settlement & in the early 19th century, packed with sailors, whalers, sealers and traders exploiting the South Seas, it was called ‘The Hellhole of the Pacific’. Rest assured it’s much more peaceful now! Tonight you stay in NZ’s earliest licensed hotel and bar, situated right on the waterfront. Trust us when we say you will fall in love with this little town.
Russell to Mangonui - Self Guided
This morning take the short ferry trip across to the little seaside town of Opua to continue your journey heading northwest to explore the small back roads of rural Northland. These small country roads wind their way through bush clad hills and small farming communities. You’ll often have the road just to yourself. There’s no hurry today so relax and enjoy the ride. Your accommodation tonight is a charming restored heritage building, nestled on the waterfront in the little coastal town of Mangōnui.
Mangonui to Cape Reinga - Self Guided
Today, you have an exhilarating ride ahead as you make your way to Cape Reinga, situated at the very top of the North Island. It promises to be an absolute thrill, offering you the opportunity for spirited riding and a true sense of adventure. The road leading to Cape Reinga features sweeping curves that beckon you to indulge in the joy of the ride, and you will be rewarded with breathtaking views upon reaching your destination. For the Māori people, Cape Reinga holds immense spiritual significance and is referred to as Te Rerenga Wairua, meaning "the departing place of the spirits." Taking a short walk down to the lighthouse is highly recommended, as it allows you to experience the wild turbulence in the water where the Pacific Ocean meets the Tasman Sea. This natural phenomenon provides a captivating sight and serves as a powerful reminder of why this location holds such importance for the Māori community. Don't miss the chance to capture some incredible photographs at this remarkable spot. After taking the time to rest and absorb the awe-inspiring views, your journey back begins. Enjoy the day.
Mangonui to Mangawhai - Self Guided
Before leaving the Bay of Islands today take a little side trip to visit the Kerikeri Mission Station situated in a delightfully picturesque setting on the banks of the Waipekakoura river. The Mission Station was established in 1819 & is the home to 2 of NZ”s oldest buildings, the Stone Store built in 1823 & Kemp House completed in 1822. This area is rich in history, from early Māori settlements to colonial settlers, whalers, and missionaries. From here you'll head inland to explore the smaller country roads as you head south. You'll ride past small settlements like the little town of Waipu, with its strong Scottish heritage before taking the coastal road through the Kauri forest to beautiful Mangawhai, our home base to return your motorcycle.
