About this tour

This self-guided New Zealand motorcycle tour promises an unforgettable journey through the natural beauty of both the North and South Islands. Ride all three Alpine Passes of the Southern Alps, cruise through a breathtaking fjord, follow windswept coastlines, and explore hidden back-country roads few visitors ever see. This adventure truly has it all.

Interested in booking for Nov 2026 or Jan 2027? Then get in touch at hello@openroad.nz and register your interest. We'll update you as soon as we've set dates.

Starting and finishing in Auckland, this tour takes you along some of New Zealand’s most iconic motorcycling roads. In the North Island, highlights include Lake Taupo, the dramatic landscapes of Tongariro National Park, and the volcanic scenery around Taranaki.

Crossing to the South Island, the ride becomes even more thrilling as we conquer all three legendary alpine passes — Haast Pass, Arthur’s Pass, and Lewis Pass — each offering sweeping bends, mountain scenery, and unforgettable motorcycling. A definite highlight is an overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound, New Zealand’s largest and most remote fjord.

Along the way, you’ll stay in handpicked boutique hotels, enjoy warm Kiwi hospitality, and dine on world-class Pacific Rim cuisine. This tour is the perfect blend of adventure, scenery, and authentic New Zealand experiences.

Day 1 of 24

Auckland to Whitianga - Self Guided

This morning you will collect your motorcycle from our Auckland headquarters and ride towards the East Coast & the start of the Coromandel Loop Rd. This narrow, twisty & windy road hugs the coast with fantastic views across the Firth of Thames and Hauraki Gulf and is a favourite destination for motorcycle riders. A road trip along the Coromandel Peninsula has got to be one of the best scenic drives in New Zealand. Between its pristine white sand beaches, turquoise sea, and fern-filled rainforests, the Coromandel is one of the most gorgeous regions in the North Island. It's worth making a stop for lunch in Coromandel Town so you can sample the local delicacy - oysters. Tonight your accommodation is in the small coastal town of Whitianga.

We take you to corners of New Zealand most visitors drive past, and the evenings are part of the tour: hotels we choose ourselves, Pacific Rim cooking and good local wine and beer to go with it.
