Day by day
Where each day takes you. Open a day for the roads, the stops and its map.
Day 1 of 24
Kia ora and welcome to New Zealand. Today is about settling in and getting ready for the journey ahead. Spend time exploring Auckland or relaxing after your travels. In the afternoon we will meet up to get you familiar with your bike and introduce you to your fellow riders, followed by a relaxed welcome dinner overlooking the marina in the Viaduct Harbour.
Auckland to Taupo
Our first riding day leads us south through the Waikato region on quiet back roads that ease you into New Zealand riding. Expect smooth sweepers, gentle elevation changes and open farmland as we leave the city behind. As Lake Taupō comes into view, the road opens up and the volcanic plateau begins to shape the landscape ahead.
Taupo to New Plymouth
Today’s ride crosses the centre of the North Island toward the west coast, blending forested sections with flowing rural roads. You’ll ride through river valleys and past native bush before Mt Taranaki appears on the horizon — a near-perfect volcanic cone that dominates the skyline. The closer we get to the coast, the more open the roads become, with long bends and wide views toward the Tasman Sea. Our destination today is New Plymouth, a relaxed coastal city known for its parks, art scene and ocean views.
New Plymouth to Whangamomona
Today’s ride is a true highlight and a favourite with our guides. We follow the coastline around Mt Taranaki before turning inland onto the legendary Forgotten World Highway. This road is made for motorcycles, with constant corners, changing surfaces and dramatic scenery. Expect tunnels carved through hillsides, narrow valleys and stretches where it feels like the road belongs only to us. After lunch in the tiny “Republic of Whangamōmona,” we return toward New Plymouth via the slopes of Mt Taranaki. The road climbs steadily into cooler air, with sweeping bends and panoramic views back across farmland and out to the Tasman Sea. On a clear day, the perspective from the mountain makes the earlier coastal ride feel a world away — a perfect contrast and a memorable way to finish the day.
A chance to slow the pace and enjoy New Plymouth’s coastal setting. Walk the waterfront path, explore Pukekura Park or visit the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery. With Mt Taranaki often visible behind the city, this is a great place to recharge before heading back into more remote riding country. Dinner tonight is at your leisure.
New Plymouth to Apiti
We head south along sections of the rugged west coast, where black sand beaches meet rolling farmland and distant mountain ranges. The road alternates between long open sweepers and tighter rural sections as we move inland toward the Ruahine Ranges. Tonight’s stay at a family-run farm lodge adds to the sense of being deep in New Zealand’s rural heartland and where warm hospitality is part of the experience.
Apiti to Wellington
Today’s ride flows through the back roads of the Wairarapa, a region of wide valleys, vineyards and quiet farming towns. After visiting Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre to see native species, we climb into the hills and tackle the Rimutaka Hill Road — a classic New Zealand pass with tight bends, steep gradients and sweeping views before dropping down into Wellington.
Wellington to St Arnaud
This morning we trade asphalt for water as we cross Cook Strait by ferry, cruising through the sheltered bays and forested hills of the Marlborough Sounds. Back on the bikes in the South Island, the ride to St Arnaud introduces us to alpine scenery — cooler air, clear lakes and mountain ridgelines lining the road into Nelson Lakes National Park.
St Arnaud to Kumara
The Buller Gorge delivers one of the South Island’s most enjoyable rides, with the road twisting alongside the river through dense native bush. Expect a steady rhythm of bends and changing light as cliffs and forest close in around the road. We pass through the historic gold town of Reefton before reaching the historic settlement of Kumara, where reminders of the gold rush still shape the town. This region is rich in gold mining history and is truely an unspoilt and untamed natural wilderness.
Kumara to Lake Tekapo
Crossing the Southern Alps via Arthur’s Pass is a true highlight of the tour. The road climbs through steep valleys and braided rivers before opening into high alpine scenery. As we descend onto the Canterbury Plains, the landscape changes again to wide open spaces and big skies, before arriving in Lake Tekapo with its turquoise-blue waters and the Southern Alps in the distance. .
A full day to enjoy Tekapo’s alpine setting. Wander the lakeshore, soak in hot pools, or explore high-country roads and lookouts by 4WD. At night, Tekapo’s Dark Sky Reserve offers some of the clearest stargazing in the world.
Lake Tekapo to Cardrona
Leaving Lake Tekapo this morning, we ride beside Lake Pukaki with Mt Cook dominating the horizon, one of the most photographed road views in New Zealand. The climb over Lindis Pass brings long flowing curves through golden tussock valleys and rocky outcrops. Central Otago’s dry, open landscapes signal our arrival in the historic settlement of Cardrona, home to one of New Zealand’s oldest and most photographed hotels, where we stay tonight. It is one of only two remaining buildings from the Cardrona Valley gold rush era.
Cardrona to Manapouri/Doubtful Sound
Heading south to Manapouri, we prepare for a unique experience in Fiordland National Park. Leaving the bikes behind, we'll board the Fiordland Navigator for an overnight cruise into Doubtful Sound, the deepest of New Zealand’s 14 fiords. Expect towering cliffs, waterfalls and rainforest as we glide through one of the most remote parts of the country. Kayaking and stargazing are on offer before settling into your private cabin.
Doubtful Sound/Manapouri to Queenstown
This morning we will experience more of this amazing Fjord before returning to shore. Back on the bikes once more we head to Queenstown along Lake Wakatipu where the Remarkables mountain range lines the road into town. Long sweeping bends and lake views make this a relaxed and scenic ride into New Zealand’s adventure capital. Tonight we’ll head out to explore Queenstown’s lively waterfront and dining scene.
A full day to enjoy Queenstown. Choose from jet boating, winery visits, gondola rides or lakeside walks. Whether you want adrenaline or relaxation, the alpine setting makes this a rewarding place to pause.
Queenstown to Franz Josef
Today marks the start of our journey north, and this morning we start our day with an exhilarating ride along the spectacular Crown Range, NZ’s highest sealed road, offering tight corners and wide views across Central Otago. The ride past Lakes Wānaka and Hāwea flows beautifully before we cross Haast Pass into rainforest and glacier country. The contrast between dry inland landscapes and lush coastal forest is striking. Tonight we stay in Franz Josef in the heart of Glacier Country.
Franz Josef to Punakaiki
We follow the West Coast north with the Tasman Sea on one side and the Southern Alps on the other. The road delivers smooth coastal sweepers, river crossings and changing light as clouds drift in from the sea. It's a beautiful ride through small coastal towns, rich in gold mining & greenstone history. At Punakaiki, the Pancake Rocks and blowholes showcase the power of the ocean against limestone cliffs.
Punakaiki to Maruia Springs
Today's adventure takes us from the untamed beauty of the West Coast and leads us deep inland, crossing the majestic Southern Alps once more - this time via the Lewis Pass. The road winds through beech forest and alongside clear mountain rivers, with cooler temperatures and alpine views along the way. At Maruia Springs, natural hot pools provide the perfect way to unwind after a rewarding mountain ride.
Maruia Springs to Blenheim
We descend from the mountains toward the coast and ride north along the Kaikōura shoreline. The road hugs the cliffs above the ocean, passing seal colonies resting on the rocks below. Marlborough’s vineyards signal our arrival into one of New Zealand’s premier wine regions.
Blenheim to Martinborough
Another scenic ferry crossing takes us back through the Marlborough Sounds to the North Island. From Wellington, we climb and descend the Rimutaka Range once more before reaching Martinborough. Vineyards and quiet country roads surround this small wine village.
A relaxed day to explore the Wairarapa. Options include a 4WD journey to Cape Palliser and the fishing village of Ngawi or wine tasting at nearby vineyards. The mix of rugged coastline and refined wine country makes this region surprisingly diverse.
Rest Day in Napier
Today we leave the vineyards of Martinborough behind & make our way towards another great wine growing area - the Hawkes Bay. We ride north today through rolling farmland and native forest along back country roads to the Art Deco town of Napier. Napier’s Art Deco buildings and wide streets reflect its rebuilding after the 1931 earthquake and give the town a unique character. Our hotel tonight is a wonderful example of this and you'll love the luxury & old world styling.
Napier to Taupo
Today combines two standout North Island roads: the flowing bends of the Gentle Annie across the Ruahine Ranges and the wide open Desert Road beneath Mt Ruapehu. Long sightlines, volcanic scenery and big skies make this a day that feels distinctly different from anywhere else on the tour.
Lake Taupo to Auckland
Today maybe our last day on the road together but it doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun. Our ride back to Auckland - the City of Sails, will take us back through the rolling Waikato countryside. Riding the back roads we can enjoy the lack of traffic & the verdant landscape. Arriving back in the city this afternoon we’ll have our last group meal together and relive our action packed journey around NZ.

What riders say about this tour
5.0 average from 4 reviews
“Easily the best guided tour I've been on Lance and Sally are both cracking people. Great accommodation great food great crack with everyone on the ride. The one pleasant surprise was the bikes everyone of them were great and you would have them at home in your garage .The only downer is the plane ride down there but it's worth it to get away from the British winter for a month in January. I will hopefully return in 2026. Response from the owner Cheers for awesome review Steve, likewise you were fun company to have along. We are so pleased you had a great time, we do try hard to make sure everyone gets the best out of our tours. Hope to see you again.”
Steve · UK “My brother and I went on the 24-day tour in January 2024. The tour is by no means cheap, but everyone agreed it was remarkable value. I am not a motorbike fanatic and switched to the tour bus for the last 10 days of our trip however for the enthusiast you will see more challenging motorbike twists and turns in a 14-day tour than you will see in years of typical motoring. The motor biking is challenging so if you haven’t been regularly riding in the last year, I would recommend you get some practice in and make sure you are physically fit enough for the trip. There are a variety if touring bikes available to suit all needs however discuss your preferences in good time for Lance to organise any special requirements (a low seat height for instance). New Zealand is a lovely country of mountains and breath-taking scenery, and you will get your fill of both during your trip. The gem of Open Road holidays (for me at least) is the accommodation and gourmet food. Most evenings we were treated to some new boutique rest spot with amazing food from all over the world. I for one never expected anywhere near the standard of accommodation and food provided. For any partners not interested in the challenge of hairpin 15 KPH turns I would recommend a seat beside Sally in the tour bus. During my time in the “hot seat”, I was able to quiz Sally about her country and to learn a huge amount about NZ as she answered my questions with her encyclopaedic knowledge of her home. Each trip option includes a special event again all catered for in the fee. In conclusion therefore this tour under promises and over delivers. Prepare well, forget the cost and grab what will be a “bucket list” holiday of a lifetime!”
Andrew · UK “I recently completed a 28 day guided motorcycle tour around both Islands of NZ with Open Road. It is difficult to pick a precise superlative for this tour. The country was spectacular. The roads were endlessly curved, great surface and with interesting surroundings and the bikes supplied by Open Road were in excellent condition and well up to (and better than) the conditions. Lance led the group of 6 riders with style and good humour around 5,600 km of some of the best roads I have ridden in my long motorbike career. The riding was complimented by a social program, hotels and dining experience that was second to none and Sally organised that side of the tour superbly. So many great meals and excellent hotels. I will unhesitatingly recommend Open Road and Sally and Lance to anyone thinking of going to NZ and riding bikes. Their package was great value and the quality of the tour was second to none. You will not be disappointed.”
